UK care homes in crisis as COVID-19 deaths rise

As the COVID-19 continues to impact the lives of everyone in the UK, care homes throughout the country are spiralling into crisis.

Two of the major care home providers revealed today that 521 of their residents have died from coronavirus in recent weeks.

This is clearest indication so far that the reported deaths outside the NHS have been vastly underestimated up until this point.

After these statistics were published, the National Care Association warned that care home deaths run the risk of being ‘airbrushed out’ – as the daily death figures released by the government only relate to deaths in the NHS.

Conservative peer and former minister Baroness Altman has said that care homes are being ‘left without protective equipment’.

She added: “There are a lot more people apparently dying in care homes without having seen a doctor, without the normal care and treatment that you would hope they were able to receive.”

Care homes are being forced to take extraordinary measures in order to protect their residents, including some care workers embarking on marathon shifts and entering full lockdown with their residents.

During this difficult period, Care 4 Quality. wants to help care providers wherever possible – with our Interim Management Support service available to support healthcare services that require senior staffing support.
